THIMPHU TO PUNAKHA
The drive to punakha is about 3hours via crossing
the Dochula Pass with 3140mtrs. The Pass is marked
by a chorten (stupa) with an array of colorful
prayer flags. If the weather permits you then you
can also view the highest peak, which are in Bhutan.
PUNAKHA VALLEY
It is located at 1250mtrs, the central school
was constructed and the village expended in the
mid-1980s. The small size of the place is surprising
considering the role that Punakha played in the
history of the Kingdom. It was the country’s winter
capital for 300 years. The fertile valley allows two
rice crops a year; oranges and Bananas are in
Abundance.
PUNAKHA DZONG
The name of the dzong is known as Pungthang Dechen
Phodrang means (Palace of Great Bliss). It was built
in 1637 by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal (Person who
unified the country in 1616. It is also the winter
residence of Monk body, and it contains the main
relic of the country. It is located in between two
rivers Male River on the left hand side and Female
River on the right hand side dzong.
CHIMI LHAKHANG (temple of the fertility)
Chimi lhakhang mean the temple of No Dog.
Chi-meaning Dog and Med Meaning No. it was built in
1459 by Ngawang Chogyal the cousin brother Drukpa
Kuenley who is popularly known as Divine Madman.
It is located on the hillock across the valley on
the right side of the Punakha road.
KHAMSUM YUELLEY NAMGYAL CHORTEN, STUPA WITH
TEMPLE
A very huge stupa temple built to bring the peace in
the country took eight and half years to complete.
It is located about 7kms away from the proper
Punakha. It contains three storied. The ground floor
of this chorten contains the images of all the
manifestation of the Dorji Phurba (Vajra Vila). The
middle floor is dedicated to Throwo Khamsum Namgyal,
One of the most powerful Manifestations of the Dorji
Phurba. Khamsum Namgyal is the most esoteric
embodiment of the positive forces prevailing over
all negative influences in the 3 forms of existence.
Top floor is the image of Throwo Namper Gyalwa,
Another powerful manifestation of Dorji Phurba.
