celebrating 100 years of a unique system of
Governance in a unique land you will become a part

In 2008, Bhutan – the last Buddhist Kingdom in the
Himalayas –will celebrate the centenary of the
Monarchy.
The First King, His Majesty Gongsar Ugyen Wangchuck,
established the rule of the hereditary Monarchy in
1907.
Over the past 100 years, the four kings of the
Wangchuck dynasty steered the Kingdom on a path of
progress, guided by a unique philosophy of
Governance that has come to be known as Gross
National Happiness. In essence, the Bhutanese sought
a quality of life that was conceived as a balance of
physical and material well-being, cultural wealth,
and spiritual development, all in harmony with
nature.
Visitor to the Kingdom will have the rare
opportunity to experience the magic of Bhutan as it
has never been seen before. They will be given
access to spiritual sites that are normally closed
to tourists, they will re-live the excitement of
