Session on
Buddhism
Buddhism is the state religion of Bhutan and the
type that is practiced in the country is called the
"Drukpa Kagyu" sect. Unlike in other
countries, Buddhism is very much part of people's
everyday life. Even government development policies
are drawn to some extent from Buddhist philosophy.
Therefore, what Bhutan considers most important for
the people is not Gross National Product but Gross
National Happiness. We believe that material
wellbeing along cannot bring happiness to people.
There has to be also a sense of spiritual
contentment. You will hear all of this during the
Buddhism session provided be none other then a
father of a re-incarnate master. He will share with
you why even the poorest of families in Bhutan are a
happy lot. What happiness means and ways to
cultivate them? how through the practice of Buddhist
values Bhutan has been able to preserve its rich
fauna and flora?
You do not have to be a Buddhist to partake in this
session. He makes it very simple and practical so
that somebody who has never even heard about
Buddhism can easily pick up the lines. The other
good thing about this session is that it is
conducted in the evenings after the day's program is
over and is very relaxing.
If you want to know Bhutan well, the important thing
is to know about its religion. Whatever you see on
your rounds in the country is all but a translation
of the ground of Bhutanese Buddhist outlook on life.
There will be nothing like it to take back from
Bhutan and I quote an earlier visitor who attended
the session, "Of all the beautiful things that I
saw and experienced in Bhutan my visit, the Buddhism
session topped the agenda. It was not a talk on
Buddhism but a reflection on human life and the life
hereafter governed by one's action. I have now begun
to read a lot on Buddhism which answers almost all
of my life's questions." Perhaps you may be one
of the many visitors who will see the world with a
different eye after attending this session on
Buddhism- an eye that is called the "Third Eye or
the Spiritual Eye'. Try it!
